Great Watch for the Money

I bought this in early November because I wanted a sweep second hand and a digital stopwatch and this seemed to fill the bill. I wore it for 3 months during which it hardly lost 5 seconds based on the Naval Observatory web site. I like its functionality so much that I bought another with a black face and gray digital panel (45201). It was totally a cosmetic issue. Now I have a spare. Two great watches for less than $90. What's not to like?

solution to freezing problem

I got one of these watches in mid-February. I liked it quite well--the main deficiency I saw in the design was that the digital display area is somewhat obscured by the minute hand when the time is half past the hour. (Also, the instructions are not very clearly written, but I managed to figure out how to operate it nevertheless.)

Then, a few weeks later, all the buttons suddenly became inoperable while I was trying to set something, and so I was essentially left with an analogue watch. I took it back to the store and got a replacement. A few weeks later, the same thing happened with the replacement watch--all the buttons became inoperable.

I had planned to take this second watch back to get a refund and then buy a different brand of watch. Before I got around to doing this, however, I started fiddling with the watch again after it had been inoperable for several days. By chance, I pushed all four buttons at once. This made the watch beep, and then voila--I could once more use the buttons. Unfortunately, pushing all four buttons at once also resets the watch, so I had to manually reset the time and date.

I'm hoping that since the four-button reset is an undocumented feature, that perhaps the button-freeze problem is also really a feature--something akin to the button-disabling function on cell phones that prevents you from inadvertently calling your mother while you're carrying the phone around in your pocket--and that the watch didn't malfunction but that I somehow inadvertently triggered this function. And I'm hoping furthermore that there is also some undocumented unfreeze button combination short of completely resetting the watch. But even if this isn't the case, at this point, I am leaning toward keeping the watch--at least if it doesn't freeze up often and if I can always get it to work again when it does.

The Good and The Bad

I have had three of these watches in the last 6 years. They come on sale at the kmart near my house for 20 dollars. First off, it should be said that I am pretty rough with my watches. I have had both experiences as described by other reviewers. The first one I bought lasted for a while and took quite a beating. The second one, the battery died very quickly (less than 2 months) and then when i treied to replace the battery (a very hard thing to do on this watch), I ended up breaking it beyond repair. The third one still works, but the little metal rod that holds the strap onto the watch will not stay in place. I came here to see how much they are going for now, but all i really need is that little metal thing that holds the strap to the watch. This third watch has been functioning fine for about a year.

Hope that helps.

classy, sturdy, long lasting

Just like the commercials in the 1970s - "Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'." I don't care for the tiny watch faces typically available on "ladies'" watches, but I don't want to wear a watch that looks too masculine, either. I like a trade-off between easy-to-use, functional, yet not "butch," either.

The Indiglo™ feature that lights up the watch in low-light is a godsend. I use it all the time. If I wake up in the middle of the night for any reason, I always take a glance at my watch before I go back to sleep. The light is strong enough to light up the face of the watch so it can be read, but not so strong it's blinding. Non-Indiglo™ watches that "light up" have one dim light to the side, that really only lights up half the watch dial. With the Timex Expedition ©, you can't tell where the light is coming from - the whole watch face just glows!

I keep the digital window with the current date. It's nice to have an analog watch in this digital world - and the quartz movement ensures that the time is precise. Probably because of my excessive use of the Indiglo™ feature, I have to get the battery changed about once very 18 months.

As much as I love this watch (I wear it everywhere except in the shower), it loses one star for the following:

The need for a battery becomes obvious when you are suddenly 5 hours off on the analog dial - I have never seen a warning like "Batt. Lo" in the digital window in the past 4 times I've had to change the battery - it's usually the revelation that the second hand has stopped moving that alerts me to the almost dead battery.

The buttons are very hard to depress. Don't get me wrong - I don't want buttons getting pressed by accident, but the hard metal buttons are so small, it literally hurts to activate them, especially when you have to do a 2-button combo. Buttons in their next model could be a bit bigger in circumfrence and perhaps slightly flush with their bezels to make them less likely to be depressed by accident, yet much easier to press with a fingertip without the need of arms like Vishnu!

The digital features are the antithesis of intuitive. You need to carry a manual around with you if you're going to be fiddling with the digital settings. I keep it on the date function, but that's not the default, so everytime I get the battery changed, I have to go to the Timex Web site to look up the instructions again, otherwise I fiddle for hours. I had a Casio full digital back in 1982 that was more intuitive to use than this gizmo.

Despite its shortcomings, I have really enjoyed this watch, which I have been wearing for over 5 years. The leather band is high-class and the silver bezel matches my skin tone better than the gold models. I have worn this watch while wearing jeans & mowing the lawn, as well as to job interviews where I am wearing a dress - it is neutral and not too bulky. The watch mechanism is thin enough to not have that "I'm gonna bust your head open with my James Bond utility watch" look, yet it also looks like a watch - not just a "cute" bracelet.

Even though I wear it everywhere all the time, the scratches are minimal. I have banged the glass face on a million objects, scratched it on various surfaces, etc., but you have to hold the watch at a skewed angle to see any of the scratches. Still takes a licking and keeps on ticking!
